And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.
I am justified (separated from my sins and counted as innocent) by my belief in Christ's atoning sacrifice. Baptism (washing) is the act that transforms my belief into faith. Sanctification occurs as I exercise that faith to hear and obey the promptings of the Holy Ghost, transforming to become more like Him, progressing to not just bear his name, but to assume, as far as I can, his very identity.
